Montessori Schools in Reno-Sparks: A Parent's Guide

A Montessori school is a place where children choose their own hands-on work in a purposeful and joyful classroom, guided by a trained Montessori teacher.
Picture a four-year-old serving himself a snack and cleaning up after, a pair of five-year-olds labeling all of the countries in Asia, and a six-year-old doing long division with hands-on materials - all completely absorbed in their work. That is Montessori in action.
Looking for a Montessori school in Reno or Sparks? This guide covers what Montessori is, the programs families can find here, and how to choose one.
Northern Nevada Wildflower Montessori (NNWM) is a tuition-free public Montessori charter school opening in Reno-Sparks in August 2027. We are rooted in this community, and we are glad you are here.
What Is a Montessori School?
Montessori rests on three simple ideas:
Child-directed learning. Kids choose their own work from a set of options. They learn to focus and make decisions, and a teacher guides them.
Mixed ages. Classrooms usually mix ages (ages 3-6, 6-9, 9-12) Younger kids learn by watching older ones. Older kids gain leadership skills.
Long work time. Children get long, uninterrupted stretches to finish what they start.
The room itself is called a "prepared environment." That means a purposeful and beautiful space with low shelves and hands-on materials, set up so children can reach and choose their own work.
Kelly B., one of our founding teacher-leaders, met her first Montessori child while teaching music. He transferred to her school. She was impressed with how confident, curious, and happy he was that she went to see a Montessori classroom for herself.
She knew right then it was the right path for her own children.
Does it work? One well-known study offers a clue.
Researchers used a school lottery to compare children who all applied to the same public Montessori school. Some won a seat. Others went to other schools.
The children who won showed stronger academic and social skills in several areas at both ages tested, about 5 and about 12, according to a study in the journal Science.
The study was small and looked at one school. It is one piece of evidence, not the final word.

Montessori School Options in Reno and Sparks
Families in the Reno-Sparks area can find Montessori in a few forms:
Private Montessori schools. These charge tuition.
Child care and preschool programs. Some use some Montessori materials. Ask if they have trained Montessori guides.
Public Montessori charter schools. These are free to attend.
A charter school is a public school with its own board. It is free. If more families apply than there are seats, a lottery decides who gets in.
Each option fits different families. Everyone is doing the best they can, and the right fit is personal.
Here is what to know about NNWM:
Free to attend. There is no tuition.
Trained guides. Every classroom is led by a credentialed Montessori guide.
Community-Embedded. Families are true partners, and the school is designed to serve and strengthen the community around it.
Teacher-led. Teacher-leaders collaboratively run the school instead of a principal.
Part of the Wildflower Network. We learn alongside over 80 small Montessori schools across the country. See our guiding principles.
Growing over time. We start with Pre-K4-2nd grade and we grow through 6th grade.
Close to home. Our school site is still being chosen, within 20 minutes of downtown Reno.
A fair lottery. Every student who applies gets at least one entry in our enrollment lottery. Some students get extra entries, including students from lower-income families, students learning English, and students with disabilities. More entries mean a better chance, not a guarantee.
Nevada Ready! Pre-K4 is a separate program, funded entirely by Nevada Ready! Pre-K grants. It is free for qualifying families and has its own form and lottery.
Pre-K4 children get priority for kindergarten at NNWM, as Nevada law requires. Learn more on our Admissions page.
Is Montessori a Good Fit for My Child?
Montessori works for many kinds of children. It is not the only good path, and there is no single "Montessori kind of kid."
Children who often enjoy it:
Kids who like independence and to make their own choices and those who like to follow adult directions
Kids who are still learning English and ones who have special needs
Kids who are social and kids who are quiet
Kids who already love order and ones who are learning to put things away
At NNWM, support for children learning English and for children with IEPs (special education plans) is part of the plan from day one.
Maybe you are a single parent working two jobs. Maybe your family speaks Spanish at home. Maybe a grandparent is raising your child.
A school should work for your family, too. Read how equity shapes our principles.
